Etta James speaks out on Beyonce! 21 Feb 2008

Beyoncé is going to have the best coach in the biz when she takes on the role of Etta James in Cadillac Records, a forthcoming movie about Etta's life. The legendary singer tells PageSix.com exclusively that she's going to be advising the "Bootylicious" star herself.

"It's a privilege and an honor to have somebody like that girl. I don't think she looks like me, but that's all right. They can that up," Etta tells us. And appearance isn't all Beyoncé will have to work on.

"Oh my god, she's going to have a hill to climb, because Etta James ain't been no angel!" she says.

Producers have informed Etta that she'll get the chance to consult with the 26-year-old Destiny's Child star, giving her pointers on both the acting and the singing — the latter being something the "At Last" singer was most concerned with when she got wind of the casting.

Of her many hits, Etta feels, "I have my own way of putting those songs over, and I was just wondering if Beyoncé could, and my son said, 'They're thinking about how she looks, but mama, she can really sing!'"

"I kinda have a man's voice. It's a contralto, more bluesy, religious. I would really like to work with her on that," the 70-year-old songstress says.

Of her life lessons, Etta, who battled heroin addiction for many years, says, "I can tell Beyoncé some things; some of the things I might not tell her."

She does stress that the emotional transformation Beyoncé must undergo will have to be a little intense.

"I wasn't as bourgie as she is, she's bourgeois. She knows how to be a lady, she's like a model. I wasn't like that... I smoked in the bathroom in school, I was kinda arrogant, so those are some of the things I would want to tell her."

The meeting between the divas will be happening soon, as sources tell us filming is scheduled to start on March 10 in New Jersey, with two days on location in Mississippi.

Knowles to rev up 'Cadillac Records' 20 Feb 2008

Beyonce Knowles is adding "executive producer" to her resume.
The 10-time Grammy winner has signed on to executive produce and star in Darnell Martin's "Cadillac Records" for Sony BMG Films.
Knowles will play Etta James in the 1950s period film about the Chicago record company Chess Records; its founder, Leonard Chess; and the turbulent lives of some of the label's legends, who included Muddy Waters, Little Walter, Howlin' Wolf and Chuck Berry.
Martin ("Their Eyes Were Watching God") penned the screenplay. Sony BMG's Andrew Lack and Sofia Sondervan are producing for the 3-year-old specialty label.
Knowles joins a cast that includes Adrien Brody (Chess), Jeffrey Wright (Waters), Cedric the Entertainer (Willie Dixon) and Columbus Short (Little Walter). Emmanuelle Chriqui and Tammy Blanchard co-star.
Music for the film is being produced by Steve Jordan ("Cars," "The Sopranos"). Knowles will record four songs for the soundtrack, which will be released through Music World Entertainment and Columbia Records.
The singer-actress will donate a portion of her fees for the film to recovering addicts through her family's charity, the Survivor Foundation, according to her reps.

Knowles ("Austin Powers in Goldmember") earned a Golden Globe nomination for her role as Deena Jones in 2006's "Dreamgirls" and a 2008 Grammy nomination for best compilation soundtrack album for the film. She also was nominated for the record of the year Grammy this year for her song "Irreplaceable."

Knowles is repped by ICM and Music World Entertainment.

The Queen Versus Beyonce, Round Two 16 Feb 2008

During the NAACP Image Awards Thursday night, Aretha Franklin didn't address the Beyonce dust-up. She was too busy being honored with the Vanguard Award. But that doesn't mean there's nothing new on the subject, because Beyonce's dad and manager is jumping into the war of words.

Mathew Knowles says Franklin's criticism of Beyonce is "ridiculous." To recap, Franklin was upset that Beyonce referred to Tina Turner as "the queen" before she and Turner performed at the Grammys this past Sunday.

Franklin said in her statement she wasn't sure if it was Beyonce who used the term on her own or if the Grammy people somehow put her up to it. Either way, Papa Knowles isn't having it. He tells CelebTV.com he doesn't get what the big deal is. He says there are all kinds of queens and he even calls his wife his "queen." Knowles wonders if Franklin would have a problem with that, too.

"You can't compare my legs to Tina's - no!" 16 Feb 2008

Beyonce is still talking about her memorable performance with Tina Turner at last weekend's Grammy Awards ceremony.

And that includes the 68-year-old legend's sleek set of pins!

"You can't compare my legs to Tina's - no!" Beyonce told Extra. "Tina's legs at 68 look better than mine at 26."

"I was beyond nervous. I was so nervous I couldn't even hide it," she added about her performance. "So I just had to scream and jump up and down."

Aretha not happy with Beyoncé 13 Feb 2008

Aretha reminds Beyonce she still reigns as 'Queen'
Franklin says Grammy snub as "cheap shot for controversy"

Aretha Franklin would like you to know there’s only one queen in this music kingdom.

Young pop star Beyonce had raised a few eyebrows during Sunday night’s Grammy Awards, reciting a seemingly scripted line that introduced music legend Tina Turner as “the queen.”

That designation apparently didn’t sit well with Franklin, who was in the audience Sunday at Los Angeles’ Staples Center. The Detroit star, long known as the Queen of Soul, pulled rank Tuesday afternoon in a statement released to the Free Press.

“I am not sure whose toes I may have stepped on or whose ego I may have bruised between the Grammy writers and Beyonce,” the statement read. “However I dismissed it as a cheap shot for controversy.

“In addition to that, I thank the Grammys and the voting academy for my 20th Grammy and love to Beyonce anyway.”

Franklin was awarded with the best gospel performance award for “Never Gonna Break My Faith,” her duet with Mary J. Blige.

Beyonce may have a couple lines of defense: Turner has been loosely nicknamed “the Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll” through her lengthy career, even releasing a 1984 concert film of the same name. And in 1975, she turned in a memorable performance in the Who’s musical film “Tommy,” where she played the role of the Acid Queen.
